In an increasingly geopolitically uncertain situation, with growing trade tensions and tariffs, it becomes crucial to protect one's assets and secure competitive advantages through patents, trademark protection, and design protection.
As an innovation nation with an export-dependent economy, Sweden has significant values at stake.
A new report from the European Patent Office (EPO) and EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) shows that companies that own intellectual property rights such as patents, trademarks, and design protection have a significantly better economic development than other companies.
Among the results from the report, it is clear that:
- Companies with registered intellectual property rights have, on average, 41% higher revenue per employee than companies without.
- For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the difference is even more noticeable, with 44% higher revenue per employee.
- These companies also pay higher wages and create more jobs.
- Despite this, fewer than one in ten SMEs in the EU own registered intellectual property rights. This clearly shows the need to both improve access to the intellectual property system and strengthen innovation power among smaller companies.
The report is based on data from over 119,000 companies in all 27 EU countries during the period 2013–2022.
